This website is for UMD English faculty who work with Undergraduate Teaching Assistants (UTAs) through the English Department’s UTA Program.

The UTA Program supports a variety of writing and literature courses across the department, including those offered in blended and online formats. UTAships are a wonderful experiential learning opportunity for students, and working with UTAs is an equally wonderful opportunity for instructors and the students in their classes.

Core UTA Program Principles

1. 1. Our primary goal is to support and empower students
   2. UTAs are students
   3. UTAs should be encouraged to tailor this internship to their own goals
   4. UTAs should contribute to the course in meaningful ways
   5. UTAs should work closely with students on their writing
   6. Instructors know what is best for themselves, their courses, and their students
   7. Instructors should have access to resources and ongoing support
   8. The UTA Program should be tailored to meet instructors’ unique needs
