This website is for UMD English faculty who work with Undergraduate Teaching Assistants (UTAs) through the English Department’s UTA Program.
The UTA Program supports a variety of writing and literature courses across the department, including those offered in blended and online formats. UTAships are a wonderful experiential learning opportunity for students, and working with UTAs is an equally wonderful opportunity for instructors and the students in their classes.
Core UTA Program Principles
-
- Our primary goal is to support and empower students
- UTAs are students
- UTAs should be encouraged to tailor this internship to their own goals
- UTAs should contribute to the course in meaningful ways
- UTAs should work closely with students on their writing
- Instructors know what is best for themselves, their courses, and their students
- Instructors should have access to resources and ongoing support
- The UTA Program should be tailored to meet instructors’ unique needs
